Hopman Cup Results: Spain Sweeps USA

Day two of the 22nd Hyundai Hopman Cup tennis tournament saw USA get swept by Spain (3-1) as Group A play continued. The Hopman Cup is being played at the Burswood Dome in Perth, Australia.

The number seven seed USA was hoping for upset over the number four seed Spain as occurred a day earlier when Romania defeated the top seed Australia. An upset was not in the cards for the USA team that lost all three matches in the Tie against Spain on Sunday.

The number 26th ranked Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and the number 16th ranked Tommy Robredo make up the team from Spain this year. The USA team is number 48th ranked and one of the Cinderellas from the US Open, Melanie Oudin and 34th ranked John Isner.

Going into the women's singles portion of the Tie, Martinez Sanchez was not feeling well. Once on the court, she took care of business.

Oudin fought hard through out the match, but Martinez Sanchez was too strong. Martinez Sanchez defeated Oudin in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

The first set of the men's singles match was a thriller. Isner finally came out on top to win the set 7-6.

In the second set though, Robredo took control for a 6-3 win to tie them at one set each. The third and deciding set was another hard fought match.

It took almost two and a half hours for the match to be played, but in the end Robredo won the final set 7-6 and the match for Spain. The two singles victories gave the Tie to Spain, but that did not stop them in the mixed doubles match.

Spain defeated USA in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in the mixed doubles match of the Tie. Spain will play Romania next on Tuesday in the Hopman Cup tournament. USA will face Australia also on Tuesday as Group A play continues to determine who will play for the championship next Saturday.
