After a year of when Samsung first announced their new line of NX digital cameras, the Samsung NX10 digital camera has finally been unveiled at the CES 2010 show. Considered to be a hybrid line of cameras, the NX series is a compact digital camera with interchangeable lens.
The Samsung NX10 digital camera features a 14.6 MP APS-C size CMOS sensor. The new digital camera also has Samsung's 3" AMOLED screen on the back for viewing and composing images.
The NX10 can also create HD movies in its HD movie mode. The HD video capability is 720p HD video in the MPEG-4 files at 30 frames per second and there is a HDMI port on the digital camera body to play the videos on a HDTV.
According to Samsung, their new DRIMe II Pro engine and advanced AF algorithm makes the NX10 digital camera on of the fastest AF in its class that is available. Samsung has three NX mount lenses for the NX10, but will also sell a kit so the Pentax K-Mount lenses will fit.
The NX10 digital camera kit will come with the 18-55mm optically stabilized lens. Users can also purchase a 50-200mm stabilized lens and a 30mm F2 prime pancake lens that is super small.
The Samsung NX10 has an ISO range of 100 to 3200. The new digital camera also has a pop up flash to help add light when needed. The Samsung Smart Range feature is suppose to help with exposures that has both bright and dark areas.
To help keep the images clean from dust spots, the NX10 has Samsung's Supersonic Dust Reduction system.
Not considered a true DSLR digital camera, Samsung totes that the NX10 camera provides the functionality of a DSLR in a smaller, lightweight compact body. Samsung is able to do this mostly by eliminating the mirror in the camera body that is found in most traditional DSLR cameras.
Making the Samsung NX10 mirrorless allows the digital camera to be built smaller and to weigh less. The negative to not having a mirror in the camera body is that there is no through-the-lens optical viewfinder.
This means the user must use the screen on the back of the NX10 digital camera or the eye-level electronic viewfinder (EVF) to compose their image. This is one feature that I would like to try out to see if there is a difference in what you see through the EVF and what is actually recorded on the sensor.
This is an issue with rangefinder cameras and can cause some key elements in an image to be cut off when what you see through the viewfinder is not the same as what is recorded on the image. It is unclear at this time how the Samsung NX10 EVF system handles this issue.
I would also like to see if since the Samsung NX10 has no mirror, if that helps against camera shake which can be an issue on certain exposures with camera bodies that do have mirrors. The camera shake is caused by the mirror flopping up with the shutter is released and the exposure is taken.
The Samsung NX10 should compete against other Micro Four-Thirds cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 and G1 and the Olympus E-P2. The new Samsung camera is very small and compact and offers an option for those who do not want a bulkier Nikon or Canon digital camera to capture their vacation photos.
No price has been announced for the new Samsung NX10 digital camera that is on display at the CES 2010. Samsung new digital camera is expected to be available in the spring of 2010 with a choice of colors. Buyers will have a choice of Noble Black or Titan Silver.
