A massive recall of Dorel Asia cribs has been issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission due to strangulation and suffocation hazards. About 635,000 cribs are included in the recall.
There are two problems with the Dorel Asia cribs that are being recalled. The first is on the drop side models. The hardware can fail causing a space for the infant to slip into and become trap and possibly strangled or suffocate.
With the fixed side cribs that are involved in the Dorel Asia crib recall; the problem is with damage or broken slates. It is possible that an infant can get stuck in between the damaged or broken slates and strangle.
So far one death and ten injuries have been reported involving Dorel Asia cribs in the recall. The death was of a six-month old child in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The parents had apparently attempted to fix the broken crib without a repair kit. The child became entrapped and strangled. There have been 31 drop side incidents and 36 incidents involving broken slates reported.
The Dorel Asia cribs that are being recalled were sold at Kmart, Sears and Wal-Mart from January 2005 through December 2009. The 20 models included in the recall are:
WM1633, WM1633-0, WM1676BC, WM1676BCR-DC, WM2163, WM2163DC, WM1633-0-DC, GP004B3EGR, GP004B3WGR, GP006BCEGR, GP006BCWGR, DA1615B3, DAKM5132, DASE5005, DASE5009, DASE504KMC-1N, DA0504KMC-1W, DA1614B3, DAKM5152, DASE5015
Anyone with one of the Dorel Asia cribs included in the recall should stop using the crib immediately until a repair kit can be received and installed. Crib owners can call Dorel Asia at 866-762-2304 or go to their website to order the repair kit. In a related news, this morning Graco issued another recall, which includes 1.5 million strollers. #1 problems
with a recall like this I think it is pathetic that the company could not do a better job getting people their parts. I sent in my application back in Jan for the recalled parts and am still waiting. I was promised no later then the last week of May yet when I call in the company itself hasn't received the parts to even sip out to me. I am due in 2 weeks and have had to go and buy a bassinet so that my baby has somewhere to sleep because of all of this. I have found the people that I have talked to be rude and not helpful....anybody else having the same issues?
