The US government is playing off the ads used by the well-known credit report service Experian's freecreditreport.com. These ads are part of the Federal Trade Commission's efforts to help consumers to go to the government site annualcreditreport.com instead of the Experian site for their free credit report.
Every American is entitled to one free credit report annually from the three main credit reporting services. Experian's freecreditreport ads and website confuse many people in thinking that is where to go for the free credit report.
Instead, many are signed up for a service with a monthly fee. The government is now trying to stop such practices and inform the public on what the actual free government website to obtain a free credit report is.
