2009 is a better year than 1849 for Edgar Allan Poe. He's going to get the grand funeral he should have received to mark his 200th anniversary. Poe was found outside a Baltimore tavern distressed and delirious and died at age 40 after four days in a hospital one hundred sixty years ago; less than 10 people attended Poe's funeral.
On Sunday with two services expected to draw 350 people each, Poe's funeral will be elaborate. Actors will portray writers, artists and contemporaries from the past paying respect reading eulogies about him.
To make it realistic as possible actors will follow proper etiquette for funerals. A special-effects artist from Baltimore created a mock corpse of Poe. The body was on view Wednesday in West Baltimore at the Poe House where Edgar Allan Poe actually lived. Advanced tickets are sold out.
