Sun Microsystems Procures Early Capacitive Coupling Technology from Polychip, Inc.

Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a strategic intellectual property agreement with Polychip, Inc. that includes acquiring all patent rights for pioneering work in capacitive coupling technology for direct chip-to-chip computer interconnect without wires. This agreement supports and complements current research and development at Sun in the area of Proximity Communications, and recognizes early important fundamental work in the field by Dr. David Salzman and Dr. Thomas Knight.

Sun's Greg Papadopoulos said, "David (Salzman) and Tom (Knight) are visionaries who led the way in Developing groundbreaking ideas in capacitive coupling and chip-to-chip communications. Their innovations helped to define a field which, combined with other Sun research, provide great advantages for future product development. We are pleased that we've entered into this strategic agreement and look forward to developing the potential of revolutionary systems."

Polychip's Salzman commented, "Industry was not prepared to adopt something as radical as proximity communication until Sun made the commitment, investing the money and people to work out the details of manufacturing and testing. By acquiring Polychip's technology, Sun has positioned itself to bring uniquely capable products to market."

Sun and Polychip have engaged in discussions about early work, the current state of the technology, and the additional developments necessary to allow the technology to impact future computer systems. Sun and Polychip determined that continued development of the technologies by Sun will provide the best application of the technology for the market. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed - Sun Microsystems.
