You might think the tough man of the Habs, now toned down to 245 pounds, would devote himself to a high protein diet. No way for the 32 year old Montréal native. Since June, he has devoted himself as a vegan.
No diary, meat or use of any animal byproducts for this fighter. Known around the NHL to tangle on ice he’s now fighting as an animal rights activist. He is a supported of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and sent a letter to Prime Minister Stephan Harper denouncing the controversial Canadian seal hunt.
Last year was a tough one for the big guy. Due to back problems he had to sit out and miss many games. With the loss of 20 pounds and adopting a new vegan diet, the bruiser feels that his back will remain pain-free throughout the season.
Re-inventing himself into the modern man, Laraque has definitely changed his views. “It’s unconscionable what’s happening to animals in this country and the way we treat animals we eat, I realized I had to make some big changes,” Laraque said.
Tough guy turned animal rights activist in pro sports turns heads and Laraque is an enigma.
“Being healthy and being able to play every game will have a big impact on the team because it will give our guys more room every game, not just the games where I'm healthy,” Laraque said.
