Montréal Canadiens: Devil of Good Time

Jay Leach

Montréal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey made the decision to boost his defense by claiming off re-entry waivers Jay Leach from New Jersey. Leach re-joins buddies Brian Giontra & Scott Gomez… all former Devils.

A good move for the Habs as they are down three defensemen; Andrei Markov, Hal Gill & Ryan O’Byrne are all out with injuries.

I believe the famous strategist Sun Tsu said it best, “the only real defense is active defense.” And Gainey knows. Back in the glory days he was the premiere defensive forward in the NHL. Playing blanket hockey to all who opposed him. His defensive play won him four Frank Selke Trophies. And he helped Les Glorieux to five Stanley Cup’s.

Leach, at thirty years old, brings experience blue line presence. The six-foot-five 225-pound Leach brings a big body and physical style and it’s welcome. He should play well into Coach Jacques Martin’s defensive style.

Yet Leach was surprised by joining the Habs and said, “I’ve been on waivers a lot and never had a sniff, so I’m a bit surprised and excited by the opportunity. I had the chance to play here last year and there’s nothing like it.”

“I’m assuming I’ll play the same way I played in Jersey – stay at home, kill penalties, if I can and try not screw it up,” he said.

Jay Leach should fit in nicely as the new re-vamped Canadiens look forward to a Devilish of a time!
