Twitter Has Become My Main News Source

Remember the Simon and Garfunkel song The Only Living Boy in New York with the lyric line “I get the news I need on the weather report”? Now the refrain could be “I get the news I need on Twitter.”

While I still daily read in hard copy The Wall Street Journal and Daily Variety (I have varied interests), I rely on Twitter to get news from people I follow and who I trust.

Here are just two examples of the social media platform Twitter being used by traditional media:

John Levesque reported on September 13th in a story special to Seattlepi.com that Seattle TV station KCPQ/13 just sponsored a tweetup – meeting in person – of people who follow “Q13FoxNews” and its personalities on Twitter.

And in an August 30th Daily Variety article Michael Schneider reported how @FoxBroadcasting (Twitter username) planned to have cast and producers from TV shows “Fringe” and “Glee” tweet during airings of both shows in the coming week.

These are just some of the innovative ways that Twitter is being used to troll for expanded target markets for traditional media.

FYI – Those of you on Twitter and in LA. There is an LA tweetup this evening in Beverly Hills. Follow @LATweetah and click through to the information on Facebook. (See how these social medua sites go hand in hand?)

One of the most exciting things about being a regular Twitter participant is that there’s always something new to learn both from the tweets of people you follow as well as blog posts and books about how to use Twitter more effectively.

This weekend I read Steve Weber’s new book Twitter Marketing: Promote Yourself and Your Business on Earth’s Hottest Social Network. As much as I know about Twitter – and I tutor people in using Twitter effectively – I still learned a great deal from this book.

That’s because, as I always say, Twitter is deceptively simple. It’s actually not simple at all if you want to employ it effectively. And it’s fascinating to read in the news each day of innovative ways people are using this social media platform to reach out to others.

If you haven’t joined Twitter yet, do so now AFTER you learn a few basic steps. You don’t want to get off on the wrong footing.

Once you’re on Twitter effectively, you’ll see for yourself how much up-to-the-second news you can get – as well as other valuable information.
