The front-page of the September 23rd Wall Street Journal carried the story “Congress Presses on War Plan” by Yochi J. Dreazen, Neil King Jr. and Peter Spiegel. What caught my attention in the article was a statement about the NBC-Wall Street Journal poll conducted between September 17th and 20th in which “59% of respondents said they were now ‘less confident’ that the war would come to a successful conclusion.”

Let me state clearly that I am NOT a political analyst although I am a supporter of a strong military force. Yet I’ve read two nonfiction books and one novel plus watched one feature film that have all led me to say:

We Americans in general have absolutely no idea who and what we are fighting against.

The nonfiction books are:

• “First In: An Insider’s Account of How the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan” by Gary Schroen -- about the first CIA people into Afghanistan after 9/11

• “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10” by Marcus Luttrell with Patrick Robinson -- about a SEAL operation in Taliban areas in Afghanistan in June 2005

The novel is:

• “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini (also the author of “The Kite Runner”) – a story of women set again several political regimes in Afghanistan and which actually provides the historical background for understanding the above two nonfiction books

The feature film:

• “The Hurt Locker” directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal – about a bomb squad unit in Iraq

Let me repeat what I just said: We Americans in general have absolutely no idea who and what we are fighting against.

And, yet, if we do not undertake to understand who and what we are facing, we put our entire country and our entire democratic way of life in jeopardy.

As Americans we must support our military as well as our wars in which dedicated military personnel – both men and women – serve courageously to protect us today, tomorrow and hopefully for a long time to come.
