If you have any doubts about the explosion of Twitter.com usage, here’s news that should interest you. UniversitiesAndColleges.org conducted a study of the top 100 U.S. colleges and universities using Twitter. The study reports:

“Of the ten schools who output the most tweets each day, none have more than 10,000 total followers. The most prolific tweeter is George Washington University at nearly 58 tweets/day. At the lower end, 9% of schools output fewer than 4 tweets each day. However, there does appear to be a correlation between following other users and actively tweeting. Most colleges who follow many users are also among the most prolific tweeters.”

Here are a few statistics from when the study was done (obviously things change very quickly on Twitter) starting with “The Early Adopters”:

The University of Florida leads the Top 10 by Number of Accounts with 24. In 8th, 9th, and 10th places are universities with 15 accounts, including my undergrad alma mater Michigan State University (MSU).

Harvard University has the absolute number 1 spot of the Top 10 by Number of Followers with 18,955. Stanford has the number 2 spot with 10,873. My graduate business school alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, is number 6 spot with 9.516. The 10th spot is held by UCLA with 7,683.

Now let’s look at the Top 10 by Number of Users Following: Top spot goes to College of William and Mary with 6,056. The University of Pennsylvania has 4,208 in the 7th spot and MSU has 3,507 in the 10th spot. Neither Harvard nor Stanford is in the top 10 spots here.

Top 10 by Total Tweets per Day: Number 1 spot goes to George Washing University with 57.7, University of Pennsylvania is in 7th place with 39.4 and MSU is in 9th place with 35.9 (beating out Carnegie Mellon by .8).

Let’s be kind and leave out the names of the schools in these categories labeled “The Stragglers” – Bottom 10 by Number of Accounts, Bottom 10 by Number of Followers, Bottom 10 by Number of Users Following and Bottom 10 by Total Number of Tweets per Day.

Though I’ve spared you in this article from broadcasting your ignominy, you know who you are. So get with the program right now!
