Print Newspaper Circulation Falls While Online News Is More User-Friendly

The October 27th Los Angeles Times article by Martin Zimmerman under the headline “U.S. newspaper circulation has fallen again” reports: “U.S. newspapers continued to lose subscribers in recent months as readers increasingly turned to online news sources and price increases scared off cost-conscious consumers."

“The average weekday circulation of the nearly 400 daily papers that reported sales slid 10.6% to 30.4 million from April to September compared with the same six-month period in 2008, the Audit Bureau of Circulations said Monday. That was bigger than the 7.1% decline recorded during the previous six-month period.”

Given this news, the Los Angeles Times should be pleased with the review its online site got from WebsiteMagazine.com senior editor Mike Phillips under the headline “The LA Times’ User-Centric Redesign”:

“Newspapers, by and large, are beginning to embrace their online readership rather than fight the transition. Nowhere is this more evident than the recent redesign of the Los Angeles Times' website."

“What stands out immediately is that it looks like a blog. In fact, it looks a lot like any blog you might read from just about any blogger.”

And then consider the way Examiner.com has moved into markets across the country with reporting on an incredible number of local and national topics. (I’m a National Internet Business Examiner.)

Businesswoman Nancy Brown recently filled a void in the town of Claremont, New Hampshire, when the local newspaper folded overnight. Within days she had set up online YourClaremontPress.com (for which I write a weekly Internet marketing column).

It is only a matter of time before print newspapers go the way of all the other outdated news distribution methods.
