Nickelodeon Celebrates Annual Worldwide Day of Play

Nickelodeon celebrates its annual Worldwide Day of Play on Saturday, September 26 to inspire children to be more active. From 12 to 3pm, Nickelodeon's TV channels and websites, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons Network, NOGGIN, The N, Nick.com, Noggin.com, Nicktoonsnetwork.com and The-N.com, will shut down so children can play without a television or computer.

The World Wide Day of Play (WWDP) is part of Nickelodeon's health and wellness efforts which include grants programs, public service announcements, websites and games. Over the past six years, more than 1 million kids have pledged to get healthy. This day of play gives children a reason to get up and away from electronics. Parents can help by making it a household celebration and doing the same.

Exercise is often not encouraged in homes, especially when children are surrounded by televisions, video games and computers. This can often lead to obesity and other major health issues. Nickelodeon's World Wide Day of Play is a great example of helping children get more active.

In August, a study in the journal Academic Pediatrics showed the rate of severe obesity among U.S. children and teenagers age two to nineteen has more than tripled over the past three decades. In some states, nearly one-third of middle and high school students are overweight or obese. Obesity is the single biggest reason for the increase in health care costs, according to a study done by non-profit group RTI International.

More than 250,000 kids in more than six countries and in every U.S. state are expected to participate in Nickelodeon's sixth annual World Wide Day of Play. Over 1,000 local events are scheduled and Nickelodeon will partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City on its flagship WWDP New York event, The Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC Race for the Kids event.

Nickelodeon will kick off their World Wide Day of Play on Saturday, September 26 when it will turn off the channel from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. Parents can get more information about Nickelodeon's World Wide Day of Play by going to www.worldwidedayofplay.com.
