On Wednesday, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, introduced an $856 billion health care plan. The plan would require just about all U.S. citizens to have insurance or pay a penalty.
Clinton felt that the proposal was as 'far-reaching as the Senate would accept". It has been criticized by some Democrats for not having a public option for a government run insurance program. The finance committee will be the last to deal with this legislation which include the biggest changes in the nation’s medical-care system in more than forty years.
“If they believe a bill is going to pass, some of them will vote for it,” Clinton said in an interview in New York “And if they believe they have a chance to keep any bill from passing, they will be put under excruciating pressure to vote against whatever is there for reasons that have nothing to do with health care and have everything to do with politics. I’ve been through this. I’ve seen it.”
President Obama has consulted with Former President Clinton about the health care initiative. He most recently met with Clinton over lunch in New York just days after delivering his speech on health care to Congress.
What's next for the Obama's health care bill that Bill Clinton thinks might pass? On Tuesday September 22nd, the committee starts the "mark up," voting on amendments to change the bill. After a few days of amendments, the committee will take a last vote to approve the bill and send to it the full Senate. It's going to be a long process.
