Oprah confirmed her choice while taping the Oprah Winfrey Show and mentioned that the book was a first. In the past she veered away from short stories as they usually left her wanting to read more, but the pieces in this "incredible book" made her gasp, the talk-show host said.
Author Uwem Akpan, a Nigerian Jesuit priest now working in Nigeria, grew up in a village with a tradition of storytelling. He studied creative writing at the University of Michigan. In 2005 he sold a short story to the New Yorker in 2005 and that led to a book deal. The endorsement by Oprah for his book, "Say You're One of Them" makes Akpan's book a sure-fire bet that it will be a best seller.
On his website, author Uwem Akpan writes:
"Finally, my friend Wes Harris believed in me enough to get me a laptop. This saved me from the despair of losing my stories and made me begin to see God again in the seminary. The stories I saved on that first laptop are the core of Say You're One of Them."
Oprah chose the last choice for her book club, David Wroblewski's "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle," was almost a year ago. For those who await the latest choice for Oprah's book club, the announcement of "Say You're One of Them" as her current choice was big news.
