Emmy Awards 2009 Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris

The 2009 Emmy Awards will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on Sunday, September 20 and CBS is hoping for a big viewer turn out. Viewership for the Emmy Awards fell last year to its lowest level in nearly two decades. Front runners for the 2009 Emmy Awards include 30 Rock and Mad Men, both very popular show. Highly rated shows up for awards and a bit of an overhaul for the typically stuffy Emmys is in store Sunday night.

Some of the changes that producers wanted to make to the 2009 Emmy Awards were rejected by the unions representing television writers, directors and actors. Producers wanted to edit out some of the moments that were not necessary (i.e. the winner's walk onto the stage and fumbling with the microphone)but the unions clearly wanted to keep the editing out of the show.

CBS is hoping that The Emmy Awards host Neil Patrick Harris will give a boost to the ratings. Like other awards shows, the Emmys broadcast has been in a downward spiral and last year it hit an all-time low, with about 12 million viewers tuning in, compared with 20 million in 2002.

“It’s fun to helm the ship,” Mr. Harris said in an interview in the New York Times. “It’s fun to keep everyone’s attention shifting from place to place. It’s a very fragmented evening, an awards show, and so the host needs to be amusing without being a stand-up.”

Since the conclusion of “The Sopranos,” the hip shows to watch seem to be “30 Rock” and “Mad Men,”. Those two shows account for four of the five nominations for outstanding writing in their categories. There is a hope that first-time winners will prevail in the biggest categories. Hugh Laurie, the star of “House,” the Fox medical series, is up for best actor in a drama series for the fourth time.
