A Japanese toddler is lucky to be alive after straying onto railroad tracks in Suzaka City. The 15 month old toddler suffered only from scratches after a train came to a halt on top of her, according to police and rescuers.

The girl was reportedly standing on the tracks in Suzaka City, north-west of Tokyo, and the driver of the train spotted her. He applied the train's emergency brakes and the train stopped with the girl beneath.

She was alive and trapped in the 50 centimeter gap between the train and the tracks, rescuers said. The gap may have been the reason she survived the accident.

"The train pushed her along the level crossing and dropped her into a pit between the rails," Fuji Yoshida police spokesman Kenichi Nagata told PTI.

According to FTI, the girl sustained only slight scratches on her head and limbs in the mid-morning accident. The crossing was very close to the toddler's home and had no gate or alarm. Her mother and grandmother were home when the toddler ventured outside.

"It could have been a tragedy. It's a miracle that she survived this way," a rescue worker told the TV Asahi network.
