The Biggest Loser Season 8 is in week 2 and many viewers are changing the channel. Trainers Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper are supposed to be tough on the contestants in their quest to lose weight. This season, the trainers have turned to foul and abusive language to "inspire" the contestants on The Biggest Loser to meet their challenges.
The message boards on NBC's Biggest Loser website was on fire tonight with criticism for the trainers and their over-the-top cursing on national television. Of course, the cursing was bleeped out, but for parents who wanted to watch with their children to show them people who are trying hard to better themselves, it was not appropriate. In fact it isn't even appropriate on any prime time television show.
Some of the comments on the message boards show exactly how upset fans of The Biggest Loser are:
"Jillian’s language is completely unnecessary. Surely she can come up with a more intelligent way to motivate these people. We had to turn it off tonight because my 10 year old can read her lips even if the F#$% word is bleeped out. We used to love watching this show as a family because it was so inspirational but the inspiration is not worth the desensitization of my children."
"My 13 year old daughter was watching with me for the first time ever - she actually wanted to watch it - and SHE questioned why they allowed some bad words and didn't bleep it out?? (We don't swear in our house nor speak like that at all). What was I supposed to say? I apologized, said I don't recall it being that bad last year."
"Too much foul language on the show tonight. It's disgusting. Turned it off. You don't have to scream in people's face AND curse at them to get them to lose weight. What has happened to human civility?"
Even though the rating given to the show is "TV-PG-L", how many people actually know what the "L" is for? And why does a show like this need "strong language"...which is what the "L" stands for. It's a little stronger than just strong language this season -- with more bleeps per show than ever.
Does yelling and cursing inspire? Not really. Do the trainers on The Biggest Loser need to be verbally abusive to the contestants who are trying to make a life change? NBC needs to see the feedback coming from the viewers. Some will be a little more tolerant of the cursing and abusive language screamed into the faces of the contestants. However, it's certain from the NBC Biggest Loser message boards that people are going to be tuning out for the rest of season 8 if the bleeping continues.
