AT&T iPhone MMS Launches Today

AT&T will officially launch the much anticipated iPhone MMS service late Friday morning (Pacific time), but some users have reported it's already working. There are messages on the AT&T Facebook site that indicate some customers are already using the iPhone MMS service, so it may have rolled out early. That can't be confirmed though and it could be random Facebook users egging people on.

AT&T is expecting a huge volume of traffic with the MMS launch for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Although AT&T is prepared for massive traffic, users should anticipate some glitches or service issues while this gets underway.

AT&T posted this announcement on its Facebook Fan Page:

"We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end."

Bottom line? Be patient. If you've waited this long to use the MMS service on your iPhone and you encounter some issues due to traffic, just kick back and do something else for awhile. Launch day for any tech application is never without issues and the large crowd awaiting the MMS for their iPhone 3G or 3GS will certainly not be absolute perfection.

"The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come."

Multimedia Messaging Service for the iPhone will work with a patch from iTunes. AT&T iPhone owners will be able to quickly send pictures and videos to their friends. In order to download the patch, you will have to sign into iTunes and there will be complete instructions. A text from AT&T should appear on the iPhone when the MMS software update is ready.

Best advice? Have patience. The day is not over and hopefully AT&T will run as close to being on schedule as possible with the iPhone MMS launch today.
