Woman Implanted with Wrong Embryo Gives Birth

Carolyn Savage, who had the wrong embryo implanted in her, gave birth to a baby boy on Friday. She and her husband, Sean, said that a fertility clinic implanted another couple's embryo into Carolyn Savage's uterus. This made her an unwitting surrogate for another family. Still, she carried the baby to term and now she is giving the baby boy she carried for nine months to the biological parents.

Carolyn and Sean Savage issued a statement on Friday, "Our family is deeply grateful for the support and prayers of so many people from around the world ... We also would like to thank the medical professionals who provided superior care and treatment throughout the pregnancy and delivery. Our family is going through a very difficult time and requests privacy in the days ahead."

Ten days after the procedure in February, the couple received a call from the clinic's doctor: "Carolyn is pregnant, but we transferred the wrong embryos."

The situation crushed the couple's hope for having another child of their own. At the time, Carolyn was 39 and her chances of having a child naturally after this one were not good. Her previous pregnancy history was full of failed attempts and painful miscarriages.

The couple have always wanted a large family but pregnancy issues hindered that in the past. They have three children now, but only the birth of the Savages' first child was easy. Their second child, born almost three years later in 1997, was 10 weeks premature after Carolyn developed life-threatening complications.

Carolyn and Sean tried on and off for 10 years to have another child before turning to IVF. Eventually, Carolyn became pregnant with the couple's third child, resulting in another difficult pregnancy and premature birth. Their daughter is now a healthy 18-month-old.

In their statement after the birth Friday, the Savage family congratulated the biological parents of the baby.

"We would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to the Morell family on the birth of their son," the statement said. "We wish Paul, Shannon, their twin girls and their new baby boy the best, as they move forward with their lives together."
