The NBA will announce its social media policy this week, according ESPN news sources. According to these sources, the soon to be released policy is to be "very minimal" and "less stringent" than the social media rules put in place with the NFL when it comes to the use of Twitter and other social networks.
These policies will be put in place for NBA players, coaches and team officials when using Twitter and other social networking sites according to the report on ESPN.com.
"Individual NBA teams, though, will have the right to impose their own standards that might be more strict ... than league rules dictate. The NBA's new policy, furthermore, will treat social-networking commentary in the same manner as comments made in the traditional media, which means that anyone in the league can be fined or otherwise sanctioned for posts via Twitter, Facebook, etc., that are deemed over the line." -ESPN.com
Talking about team business and game plays have been a major concern with pro-sports teams since Twitter and other social networks have risen in popularity. Many NFL teams have imposed fine for players who have gone outside the rules when using social networks, so it is not surprising to hear that the NBA has a policy that it wants to put into effect.
The NBA policy on social media is expected to be disclosed this week. All NBA teams must be notified first and there are no comments from the NBA Team Players Association at this time.
