Yesterday the Prime Minister of Spain has been trying to get his office to remove all traces of a photo that reveals that his two teen daughters dress in "goth" clothing. Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapaterohis Zapatero has tried to keep his daughters, Laura, 16, and Alba, 13, out of the public eye but the picture taken with President and Mrs. Obama has gone viral.
The picture of the Prime Minister, his wife and two daughters was taken with President and Mrs. Obama and then was added to the State Department's Flickr stream. The Prime Minister had no idea of this when he tried to stop the spread of the photo.
Zapatero's daughters wore distinctively goth clothing in the photo. The black clothing worn by both girls and the calf-high boots worn by one of his daughter would most certainly cause Spain's adolescent goth's to rejoice. They had trendsetting fashion statements that might just brighten the lives of Spain's adolescent goths.
Spanish officials tried to persuade the state-owned Spanish news agency EFE not to distribute photographs of the two girls at the UN. They reportedly reminded the agency that the law allowed Prime Minister Zapatero and his wife to insist images of their underage children should not be published.
However, the photograph was on the front page on several national Spanish newspapers. This is the first time that many in Spain have been able to take a look at the prime minister's full family. Sheltering their children is forcing modern world leaders to deal with challenges most of their predecessors never had to contend with: digital technology and the Internet.
