"You want to get that?" Jackman shouted out to the audience, still speaking in character.
"Grab your phone, it doesn't matter," said Jackman as the ringing continues.
"Come on, just turn it off ... we can wait. Just get the phone," Jackman continues to applause from the audience.
"Don't be embarrassed. Just grab it," he adds.
Who ever had the phone on didn't make a move. It rang several times before it stopped. It was clear that this patron did not want to be humiliated in front of the crowd for forgetting to use common sense and keeping their cell phone off.
The audience reacted with a round of applause and laughter to Jackman's quick improvising skills. The Broadway play, "A Steady Rain," is a drama about two Chicago policemen and their differing accounts of a few days that changed their lives with both Jackman and Craig adopting Chicago accents for their characters. While the cell phone scene wasn't written into the play, Jackman didn't miss a beat and kept his character's Chicago accent while rousing the audience member.
Early reviews of the play, which officially opened yesterday ,have praised Jackman and Craig, with a BBC review saying the pair had a "natural rapport and shared the spotlight," meeting all audience expectations. Perhaps part of that review should be a special kudos for Jackman for pointing out the there are still so many places that cell phones do not belong.
