The Oprah Winfrey show today focused on a call to action for all women. Lisa Shannon, founder of Run for Congo Women, appeared on today's inspiring show to discuss her personal mission to help 1,000 Congolese women through Women for Women International. Shannon's mission and "Half the Sky” authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn made for an intense hour on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
Women for Women International provides women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. Their intent is to change "the world one woman at a time."
On the Women for Women International website, it is clear that their mission is just incredible.
"We begin by working with women who may have lost everything in conflict and often have nowhere else to turn. Participation in our one-year program launches women on a journey from victim to survivor to active citizen. We identify services to support graduates of the program as they continue to strive for greater social, economic and political participation in their communities."
On the Oprah Winfrey show today, a viewer was featured who was inspired by Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International. After seeing a report on rape in the Congo, Lisa Shannon was moved to take action. First she sponsored two rape victims. Lisa then exchanged letters and donated money to help these women pay for basic needs and education. The end result was Lisa dedicating her time to create her own organization, Run for Congo Women. She raised enough money to sponsor more than 1,000 women.
An intense hour long show featuring incredible stories of courageous women from around the world was well publicized and hopefully inspired many to find ways to help and empower women around the world. From Women Helping Women International to the launch of Oprah's new "For All Women" registry, there are many ways to take part in this important cause.
