David Letterman was extremely candid on his show Thursday night. Letterman admitted that he has had sexual relationships with female employees of his show. The admission comes after an extortion attempt for $2 million from someone involved with one of the women he had an affair with.

Letterman explained to the audience how he was extorted for $2 million dollars. "In the back seat of my car, there's a package that I don't recognize. What this is is a guy is going to write a screenplay about me and he's going to take all the terrible stuff that he knows about my life and he's going to put it into a movie unless I give him some money ... the creepy stuff that I had ... sex with women who work for me on the show. Now, my response to that is yes, I have."

Admitting this on public television is a bold move for Letterman. His ratings have surged since June, when Conan O'Brien took over from Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight Show."

Letterman said he called his lawyer to set up a meeting with the man who was trying to extort $2 million dollars from him. The man apparently lives with the woman that Letterman had the affair with. There were two subsequent meetings, with the man given a phony $2 million check at the last one. Letterman joked it was like the giant ceremonial check given to winners of golf tournaments.

The network said the person who was arrested works on the true-crime show "48 Hours" and has been suspended. Many celebrity news sites are reporting that the suspect is Robert J. Halderman who works behind the scenes on the show "48 hours."

David Letterman continued his show with a few off-beat remarks about his situation including telling guest Woody Harrelson, "I've got my own problems." However, he did not comment further on the extortion situation, only letting the audience know that he had appeared before a grand jury. During his testimony, Letterman acknowledged the sexual relationships.
