Teacup pigs are the latest pet craze in Great Britain and after making an appearance on the Today show, their popularity may spread quickly. Of course, they don't stay teacup size, they just start out that way. Teacup pigs weigh about 9 ounces at birth and weigh in at 65 pounds full grown at the age of 2.

Hopefully when people choose the cute little Teacup pigs they aren't basing their decision on the cuddly little 9 ounce pet. Just like puppies and kittens, these pigs grow. When they are full size, about 12-16" high, is not apt to fit in a teacup.

Teacup pigs are a mix between potbellied pigs and Tamworth, Kune Kune and Gloucester breeds. Teacup pigs are more intelligent than dogs but they are not cute little pocket pets except for the early months. They are difficult to care for and expensive to purchase -- the going rate is about $1100 for a Teacup pig. However, be prepared to shell out double that. Most breeders will only sell them in pairs.

Great Britain requires a livestock license to keep the teacup pigs as they are considered to be farm animals. Not sold in the United States as of yet, there are some strict rules in place when breeder Jane Croft sells her teacup pigs. Jane was featured on the Today show and stated that he won't sell to anyone who only wants to keep one in their home and the owners cannot be gone all day. She also wants new teacup pig owners to have a garden.

“It’s about the size of a small spaniel,” Croft said. “They make fantastic pets. They’re really clean. They’re highly intelligent and just love to be loved. They give so much back to you.”

According to Croft, these little pigs get bored easily so they need constant amusement. They are intelligent and love to play, but the owner need to commit to the time to do this.

If you live in Great Britain and want a teacup pig, you may have a long wait. Croft said there is a great demand in Great Britain and she mentioned on the Today Show that she’s selling five to 10 a week. The exposure of the teacup pigs on the Today show is going to make for a long waiting list. Croft had over over 500 inquiries on the Web site today.
