Born in New Jersey on June 16, 1917, Irving Penn studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art from 1934 to 1938, and worked as an assistant at Harper’s Bazaar in 1939.
Irving Penn's career started in the 1940's Penn’s career as a fashion photographer for Vogue. He worked for Vogue for many decades and was best known for photographing his subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop. He felt that the simple backdrops allowed the focus to be on the model and the clothing instead of the props. His work appeared on as many as 300 pages annually in Vogue magazine.
Penn married one of his favorite subjects to photogrpah,fashion model Lisa Fonssagrives, in 1950. and for decades afterward she remained one of his favorite subjects. Penn's wife Lisa passed away in 1992. Together they had one son, Tom.
Irving Penn's works can be seen in the numerous books he has published, including the recent, "A Notebook at Random" which offers a generous selection of photographs, paintings, and documents of his working methods. Penn donated photographs to the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American Art in Washington, and his archives are at the Art Institute of Chicago.
