Beatles' John Lennon Gets Moon Crater Named After Him

Beatles legend John Lennon would have celebrated his 69th birthday on October 9, 2009. In his memory, the Lunar Geographic Society named a crater on the moon in his honor. The John Lennon Peace Crater is located on the Earthside of the Moon.

John Lennon joins a very rare group who have been bestowed with the similar honor. Leonardo da Vinci, Christopher Columbus, Jules Verne, Sir Isaac Newton and Julius Caesar are a few of the big names who also have craters named after them.

John Lennon, born October 9, 1940 was an English rock musician, singer-songwriter, author, and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. On the night of December 8 1980,Mark David Chapman shot and killed Lennon in the back four times in the entrance of his New York apartment building.

The International Lunar Geographic Society advocates privatized exploration, settle and development of the Moon. The Society is undertaking a ten year, $3.8 billion program to return humans to the moon and establish permanent bases there.

The John Lennon Peace Crater is six kilometres wide and 990 metres deep. The crater rests appropriately in the heart of the Moon’s Lake of Dreams.
