Papelbon Gives Up Game for Red Sox

Jonathan Papelbon gave up three runs and four hits between the eighth and ninth innings to blow Sunday's game against the Angels. The Los Angeles Angels swept the Boston Red Sox out of the playoffs. The win advances the Angels to the AL championship series with their first postseason sweep in franchise history.

There will be no celebration tonight in Boston as Red Sox fans filed out of Fenway Park for the last time in 2009 after Papelbon's mishap. The Red Sox had won 12 of 13 post-season games against the Angels heading into the series. The game today certainly didn't turn out as well as fans and players expected.

Jonathan Papelbon was born November 23, 1980 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Papelbon has been cited repeatedly for his slow play. On September 4, 2009 it was reported that he had been fined $5,000 for failing to deliver his first pitch within the required time in a September 1 appearance. Papelbon previously told the Boston Herald that he had been cited on at least five occasions and fined more than $10,000 for these violations.

Papelbon was unavailable to play in mid-September because he slipped in the bullpen and hurt his back. Although he played today, it wasn't his best effort. The Angels took advantage of some walks and some hits to finish off the Red Sox in Boston.
