The collapse of a 23 year old runner in Saturday's Baltimore Marathon marks the second fatality in the 9 year history of the Baltimore Marathon. The runner, identified by the Princeton University newspaper as Peter Curtain, collapsed in the 25th mile of the race and was pronounced dead at Union Memorial Hospital two hours later.

Debra Schindler, a spokeswoman for Union Memorial Hospital, says Curtain collapsed about 11:20 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the hospital about 1:10 p.m. Schindler says doctors were not able to revive the 23-year-old. Neither the hospital nor the police have officially released Curtin's name to the media. Several friends of Curtin confirmed his identity to The Daily Princetonian.

Also known as The Baltimore Running Festival, there were an estimated 20,000 people running in the marathon in Baltimore Saturday with crowds cheering them on. Runners from 44 countries and every state will run, including five Olympians.

Princeton University’s paper, The Princetonian, confirms the death of Peter Curtin during the Baltimore Marathon. Peter was a 2008 Princeton graduate and was a goalie for Princeton’s men’s lacrosse team.

Curtin reportedly collapsed at the 25 mile marker. Hospital reps say he never regained consciousness after being taken to Union Memorial. He fell at 11:20 and was pronounced dead at 1:11 pm.

The Baltimore Marathon organizer Lee Corrigan told the Sun that the race had seven medical stations along the course that were staffed by roughly 250 doctors, nurses and other medical professionals.

"We are heartbroken about it, and it puts a sad note on an otherwise great day for Baltimore," Corrigan told the paper. "Our hearts go out to him and his family."
