The ride at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center was designed to inspire students in the areas of math, science and technology. "The Sum of All Thrills" experience was created by the Massachusetts company,Raytheon, as a part of their MathMovesU program. The MathMovesU program was designed to engage middle school students in math and science, and help create the next generation of innovators for the U.S.
The "Sum of All Thrills" ride is located in the Innoventions pavilion at Epcot Center in Walt Disney World. This is an area full of hands-on exhibits that allow visitors to celebrate the inspiration and innovation.
Children will use computer tablets to design a virtual roller coaster, bobsled track or plane ride. After inputting their designs, a robotic arm, much like one used in an automobile manufacturing plant, is used to let children experience their roller coaster creations.
Sitting in a carriage with their legs and arms outside the ride, kids watch a video version of their ride while the arm moves them from side to side and up and down to simulate the feeling of a real roller coaster. Fans blow air at the riders on the "Sum of All Thrills" at various speeds to give everyone the sensation that they're moving forward.
According to William H. Swanson, Raytheon Company Chairman and CEO, stated, "Raytheon shares The Walt Disney Company's commitment to innovation and education through imagination. We're proud to offer Innoventions visitors a unique experience that combines all of these attributes and that seeks to unlock the math and science potential within every student."
