Compaq Computer Corporation was an American personal computer company founded in 1982, and is now a brand name of Hewlett-Packard. In 2001, Compaq engaged in a merger with Hewlett-Packard. The Compaq name is still used by HP, retaining its brand visibility in markets where lesser priced computers are still big sellers.
The new Compaq Presario 4010f is a budget desktop system that starts at $309. Don't expect a technologically advanced computer for this price. You get what you pay for, but in this economy if you need a solid computer for basic use, this might be a good choice. The Compaq 4010 has an AMD Sempron processor, NVIDIA integrated graphics and a 250GB hard drive. The $309 price is after a $100 rebate.
There are also two desktops being released as part of Compaq’s 500B series, these are the Compaq 500B and the Compaq 505B. These low priced machines are marketed towards business users. Both machines run Windows 7 and have different hardware to choose from. Prices for the AMD-based 500B start at $359, whereas the Intel-based 505B starts at $409.
Compaq just introduced its basic, affordable laptop for less than $400. The Compaq CQ61z has a 15.6-inch screen with an AMD Sempron CPU, 2GB of RAM, DVD burner and a 160GB hard drive. Its runs Windows 7 Home Premium and is priced at an affordable $399. That is the average price for a tiny netbook which pales in comparison with their tiny screens, lower power and minimal hard drive.
These low priced Compaq computers will roll out on Windows 7 launch day, October 22. HP is doing the right thing by using the Compaq name to introduce affordable desktops and laptops for less than $400. Those who need a computer but are feeling the pinch of the less than savory economy, will appreciate the back to basics Compaq notebooks and desktops at a wallet-friendly price.
