The addition of the Kindle for PC joins a similar application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that lets users access Kindle books whether or not they own the device.
Amazon quickly made this announcement after Barnes & Noble Inc.'s recent unveiling of a competing e-reader, the Nook, that has a similar PC function. The latest e-reader from Sony Corp is also compatible with PCs.
Amazon's Kindle has dominated the electronic reader market. However, with increased competition from Barnes & Noble's Nook and Sony's e-reader, Amazon is making sure it keeps its top ranking by increasing its functionality.
Owning a Kindle is not required to access Amazon's digital bookstore, which includes more than 350,000 books. The free software required to use Kindle for PC will be available in November.
