The opening game for the 2009 World Series at Yankee Stadium will have a special guest. George Steinbrenner, 79, has been in declining health in recent years and has not been at a game in the Bronx since the home opener in April, but he will attend the series opener on October 28.

In a report on Newsday.com, George Steinbrenner's son, Hal said, "I think all these players are doing this for him. We want to win this whole thing for him. I think we feel like he's here being a big part of it."

George Steinbrenner officially handed over the control of the Yankees to his sons, Hal and Hank, last November. Hal and his brother, Hank Steinbrenner, are both co-owners of the New York Yankees. Hal had a significant role in the new stadium project. Hank's title in the Yankee system is Senior Vice President of the New York Yankees

George Michael Steinbrenner III, 79, is the owner and the former principal executive of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees. His outspokenness and role in driving up player salaries have made him one of the sport's most controversial figures.

During Steinbrenner's ownership since 1973, the longest in club history, the Yankees have earned 11 pennants and six World Series titles.

Wednesday October 28 is the first game of the World Series and George Steinbrenner will be in the Bronx at the new Yankee Stadium to watch.
