With a guaranteed prize purse of over $800K, the ING New York City Marathon 2009 raises the stakes and adds to the excitement of this popular marathon. Winners who cross the finish line are professional competitors, celebrities and amateur runners from around the world.
The New York City Marathon is a major annual marathon (26.219 mi) has a course that runs through all five boroughs of New York City.
The race is organized by NYRR (New York Road Runners) and has been run every year since 1970.
In recent years, it has been sponsored by the financial group ING. It is held on the first Sunday of November and attracts professional competitors as well as amateurs from all over the world. Because of the popularity of the race, participation of the entrants is typically chosen by a lottery system.
Last year, the New York City Marathon was held on Sunday, November 2. An amazing 37,899 runners participated in the marathon. The 2008 men's winner was MarÃlson Gomes dos Santos in 2:08:43. Paula Radcliffe won her third NYC marathon in 2:23:56.
As winners of the NYC Marathon 2009 run the course and cross the finish line, family and friends can get the winning results on the Internet. They can also watch the race on TV.

The NYC Marathon results can also be watched live on the Internet on UniversalSports.com, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m
A WNBC 4 New York broadcast will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the pre-race warm up and will follow the race through the five boroughs, across the bridges and over to the finish line until 2:00 p.m.
With so many ways to watch the runners cross the NYC Marathon finish line and to get information about the nearly 42,000 runners, there will be no chance to miss any of the runner's results. Information will be streaming in throughout the day as winners celebrate at the finish line.
