Meb Keflezighi and Derartu Tulu Win New York City Marathon

Winners crossed the finish line of the 40th New York City Marathon today as Meb Keflezighi became the first American male winner in 27 years to win the ING New York City Marathon. On the women's side, one of history's all-time great distance runners, Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia won her first ING New York City Marathon.

Meb Keflezighi, 34, who scored a silver at the 2004 Olympics, came back from both injury and tragedy to finish with a personal best of 2:09:14. Keflezighi's win today is especially sweet in light of the fact that at New York's 2007 Olympic Men's Marathon Trials, he came in eighth after suffering calf cramps and a fracture his right hip during the race.

Boston Marathon winner Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya finished in second place for men with a time of 2:09:56. Jaouad Gharib of Morroco crossed the finish line in third place, racing the course in two hours 10 minutes and 25 seconds. Ryan Hall, considered the future of US distance running, came in fourth. Hall finished the race in two hours 10 minutes 36 minutes.

Derartu Tulu, 37, placed first in the women's section of the 2009 NYC Marathon. Tuli hasn't won a won a major marathon since 2001 in London. She ended the two year reign of her great rival, Briton Paula Radcliffe, with a time of 2:28:52.

Second place in the women's NYC Marathon 2009 went to Russia's Ludmila Petrova, who ran the course in two hours and twenty-nine seconds flat. Christelle Daunay, of France, came in in third (2:29:16), nine seconds ahead of Radcliffe. Paula Radcliffe limped across the finish line in fourth place (2:29:25)with obvious knee pain.

The New York City Marathon is a major annual marathon (26.219 mi) has a course that runs through all five boroughs of New York City.
The race is organized by NYRR (New York Road Runners) and has been run every year since 1970. The race draws more than 100,000 applicants annually.
