November 3 is National Sandwich Day 2009. Aside from eating a delicious sandwich on this national day of sandwiches, you can help fight childhood hunger just by using Twitter to spread the word. Sara Lee Deli will donate $1 per Twitter followerto Share Our Strength, an organization devoted to ending childhood hunger in the U.S. by 2015.
Helping Sara Lee Deli put an end to childhood hunger is a cause that everyone should participate in. National Sandwich Day certainly has more meaning when it's connected to a great cause. So, enjoy a sandwich and get involved with Sara Lee's campaign to end childhood hunger.
Sara Lee Deli will donate up to $25,000 to Share Our Strength and hopes that this Twitter campaign will go viral.
Share Our Strength began in the basement of a row house on Capitol Hill in 1984, in the wake of the Ethiopian famine. Bill and Debbie Shore started the organization with the belief that everyone has a strength to share in the global fight against hunger and poverty, and that in these shared strengths lie sustainable solutions.
Some of the facts related to childhood hunger are staggering:
36.2 million Americans - including 12.4 million children - don’t have access to enough healthy food to thrive. They are food insecure and at risk of hunger.
Hunger impedes our children’s ability to learn and perform academically. Hungry children are likely to:
*Have impaired cognitive functioning and diminished capacity to learn
*Achieve lower test scores and overall school performance
*Repeat a grade
*Experience school absences, tardiness and school suspensions
Hunger predisposes our children to behavioral difficulties, including:
*More aggressive behavior
*Higher levels of hyperactivity, anxiety and/or passivity
*Difficulty getting along with other children
*Greater need for mental health services
