Borders Will Close 200 Waldenbooks Stores

Borders announced today that 200 Waldenbooks stores will be closed and 1,500 jobs will be cut in January to make the chain smaller and more profitable. The closings would leave about 130 Waldenbooks stores still in business.

The closing of 200 Walden books does not affect Borders superstores, mall kiosks such as the 500 Day by Day Calendar spots and other mall-based stores. These stores are not a part of the Waldenbooks closure.

Borders Group is an international bookseller based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. Borders is the second-largest bookstore chain in the United States (after Barnes & Noble), selling a wide variety of books, CDs, DVDs, and periodicals, as well as gifts and stationery.

Prior to the November 5, 2009 announcement that Borders will be closing 200 Waldenbooks stores, there were 517 Borders stores in the United States, and approximately 466 stores in the Waldenbooks Specialty Retail segment, including Waldenbooks, Borders Express, Borders airport stores, and Borders Outlet. During the autumn and winter months, Borders also operates calendar stores and mall kiosks under the Day By Day Calendar Company name.

Over the past few years, many Waldenbooks locations have been re-branded as "Borders Express" stores. Borders Group announced the downsizing of the Waldenbooks chain to respond to the current competitive environment. It will close 200 under-performing locations and will be making changes to remaining locations such as product mix and store design.
