Precious Movie Recommended by Oprah Has Big Name Cast

Precious isn't just another movie - it's been called a tragic and triumphant story. Oprah Winfrey appears in a new trailer for the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire and when Oprah speaks highly of anything, people tend to listen. On Friday's Oprah Winfrey Show, the star of Precious, Mo'Nique, was Oprah's guest.

Oprah has a firm belief that Precious will be an Oscar winner. Precious is based on the novel Push by bisexual writer Sapphire. It has piled up an amazing collection of awards and critical acclaim already. Precious has a big name cast and the star,Gabourey Sidibe, is a newcomer. Executive producer Oprah and co-executive producer Tyler Perry are putting their considerable clout behind the marketing campaign.

"When I first saw the movie Precious, I was so deeply moved, I immediately called up the director, Lee Daniels, and told him that it just split me wide open," Oprah stated.

Precious is the story of an obese and illiterate teenager pregnant for the second time by her rapist father and beaten down physically and mentally by her monstrous mother. When Precious gets the opportunity to attend a special high school program, a whole new world opens up for her.

Comedian Mo'Nique takes on the role as Precious' abusive mother, Mary Jones. It's a far cry from her comic roles on television. Mo'Nique is best known for the role of Nicole "Nikki" Parker on the UPN television series The Parkers. Mo'Nique was subsequently featured on a number of leading stand-up venues, including stints on Showtime at the Apollo, Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam, and Thank God You're Here.

Precious has a cast of other stars who all play their roles completely un-glammed. Even Mariah Carey, who play social worker Mrs. Weiss, appears sans makeup in the movie. The film also stars Paula Patton as Precious’ lesbian teacher Ms. Rain, The View’s Sherri Shepherd as receptionist Cornrow and Lenny Kravitz as a friendly nurse John. Mary J. Blige sings the film’s theme song, Destiny.

When Oprah endorses anything it's usually a hit. Tonight, limited theaters opened up to the public and the reviews have been, for the most part, outstanding. It's raw, real and not many will walk away from this movie untouched in some way.
