A strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake has shaken Indonesia. Indonesia's meteorology agency reported that there is panic in Matram, the capital of Lombok, where a strong tremor shook. Indonesia is situated in an area of intense seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire".
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured a magnitude of 6.7, and hit at 3:41 a.m. local time.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck off West Sumatra in Indonesia on Sept. 30 and killed hundreds of people and caused massive property damage.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake releases over 900 times the energy of a 4.7 earthquake - or it takes about 900 magnitude 4.7 earthquakes to equal the energy released in a single 6.7 earthquake.
The following is data from volcanolive.com that explains the effects that are felt from earthquakes ranging from five to eight on the Richter Scale.
5 to 6 Magnitude: Felt by all, people frightened, chimneys topple, furniture moves. Approximately 800 per year.
6 to 7 Magnitude: Some panic, buildings may suffer substantial damage. Approximately 120 per year.
7 to 8 Magnitude: Widespread panic, ew buildings remain standing, large landslides, fissures in ground. Approximately 18 per year.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning following the earthquake, but warned of local tsunamis.
“A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data,” the statement from the Pacific Tsunami warning center read. “However - there is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter. Authorities near the epicenter should be made aware of this possibility.”
There has been no word on damage or casualties following the earthquake in Indonesia today.

#1 Indonesia disaster
Disasters of the natural kind are a way of life in Indonesia, which has been destroyed by a trifecta so far this week. Tues Mount Mirapi unleashed one of its frequent eruptions. The mountain rumbled as people dealt with the aftermath of a tsunami, which resulted from a strong earthquake deep under the ocean floor on Monday. South of Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands bore the brunt of the tsunami, which swept residents out to sea. Searing gases and flying rocks from Mt Mirapi in central Java sent tens of thousands fleeing for safer ground.
