Hasan's ventilator was removed over the weekend, and he began talking afterward. He is apparently speaking with hospital staff, but Mitchell was unable to say whether Hasan has been speaking with Army investigators.
The suspect's brother, Eyad Hasan, released a statement Saturday saying the family was in a "state of shock and disbelief over this dreadful news."
The suspect in the mass shooting,Major Nidal Malik Hasan,is a 39-year-old licensed Army psychiatrist who worked at a hospital on the post. He was shot several times after the attack. On Sunday, he was listed in critical but stable condition and in intensive care at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.
An earlier statement from another family member said Hasan had been telling his family that he wanted to get out of the military but had been unsuccessful in doing so.
There are thirteen dead and 42 wounded according to Fort Hood's public information office. President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will attend a Tuesday memorial service for the victims of the Fort Hood shooting.
