Dancing with the Stars NFL Legend Lawrence Taylor Arrested

Former New York Giants NFL star Lawrence Taylor, who also appeared in season 8 of Dancing with the Stars, was arrested on Sunday, November 8, 2009 for a hit and run accident. Taylor, 50, fled the scene of the accident in the Miami area and was later arrested.

Jail records from Miami-Dade County reveal that the 50-year-old retired NFL star was arrested around 10 p.m. on Sunday for "leaving the scene of an accident/property damage." Taylor was charged with leaving the scene of a crash. He was also cited for careless driving.

Lawrence Taylor played his entire professional career as a linebacker for the New York Giants in the NFL. He is considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of football, and has been called the greatest defensive player of all time by members of the media, former players, and coaches.

Taylor appeared in the 8th season of Dancing with the Stars with professional dance partner, Edyta Śliwińska. The eighth season of Dancing with the Stars premiered on Monday, March 9, 2009 and Lawrence Taylor was the 7th star eliminated from the show on April 21, 2009.

Sunday night, Taylor was booked at a local police station in the Miami area and charged with a second-degree misdemeanor. He was later released on $500 bond.

According to police records, the crash happened about 6:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway at Northwest 103rd Street. The crash tore off the front right tire on Taylor's 2009 Cadillac Escalade, and he drove about two miles on the axle before pulling off the road.

Lt. James Durden of the Florida Highway Patrol reported the accident as follows:

A 1984 Ford van was in the right-hand, northbound lane of the Palmetto near Northwest 103rd Street. Taylor was driving next to it.
Taylor might have been trying to change lanes when the right front of his SUV hit the back left of the van.

"Sending the van into a counterclockwise spin in front of the Cadillac," Durden said. No one was injured.

Being arrested is not something new to Lawrence Taylor. His many years drinking and having a drug abuse problem got Taylor into plenty of trouble, both with the NFL and the law. When Taylor was once asked what he could do that no outside linebacker could, his answer was, "Drink".

However, alcohol was not his biggest substance abuse problem. After admitting to and testing positive for cocaine in 1987, he was suspended from football for 30 days in 1988 after failing a second drug test.

After his second positive test he gave up drugs for five years as a third positive test would have ended his career. After his retirement he began abusing drugs on a regular basis. He went through drug rehab twice in 1995, only to later be arrested twice over a three-year span for attempting to buy cocaine from undercover officers.

Taylor has cleaned up his life and lived a healthy, clean lifestyle since 1998. He is currently married to his third wife and has credits his love for the game of golf for helping him get past his previous hard-partying ways and drug filled lifestyle.

Taylor reportedly told investigators on Sunday night that he thought he had hit a guard rail. A sobriety test was not performed and former Dancing with the Stars dancer and NFL great Lawrence Taylor was allegedly not intoxicated.
