Chad Ochocinco's $1 bribe will cost the Cincinnati Bengals receiver $20,000 after the National Football League fined him for conduct that was "unprofessional and unbecoming an NFL player." Ochocinco isn't stressing about his fine. In fact, he's matching it and making a donation to a worthy cause.
Ochocinco isn't new to getting fined by the NFL and he certainly isn't one to keep a low profile. He's known on Twitter as @OGOchoCinco, doesn't mince words and it looks like he has a great time out on the field ... even if it costs him $20K.
Cincinnati receiver Chad Ochocinco was fined $20,000 attempting to “bribe” an official by flashing a dollar bill during a replay challenge of a disputed catch. Chad was joking but the NFL didn't think it was very funny.
Ochocinco certainly didn’t do himself any favors when he actually used the word “bribe” in postgame comments explaining the stunt, which included borrowing a real dollar bill from a person who was working for CBS’s production crew.
The NFL cited Ochocinco for violating a rule that “prohibits use of abusive, threatening or insulting language or gestures toward game officials.”
Apparently waving a $1 bill is abusive, threatening or insulting. Most people who are having a tough time financially would take that as a gift, but gesturing the $1 bill towards the game official just was not tickling the NFL's funny bone. Not that they have one.
Where the NFL came up with the $20,000 amount is unknown. Ochocinco is lucky he didn't use a $5 bill. Maybe that would have been a $100K fine.
Of course, Chade Ochocinco is making good on his fine. He was on Twitter Tuesday afternoon tweeting out his plans for the the matching $20K he planned to give to charity.
I've been fined 20k this week by the NFL,myself and @rocksoftware have no problem paying the 20k fine.
Ocho Cinco and President of @RockSoftware are going to donate 20k to hillview.org and feedthechildren.org
Then came the teaser that Ochocinco is so well known for...
It's all good, wait till you see what I do at Heinz Field.
Chad Ochocinco makes his own rules and the NFL just doesn't appreciate a good sense of humor.
“The very appearance of impropriety is not acceptable,” said Ray Anderson, the league’s executive vice president for football operations. “Your conduct was unprofessional and unbecoming an N.F.L. player.”
The officials in the game played it right -- they didn't take the bribe and the Ravens won the challenge. However, Chad Ochoctinco made good of his hand slap and the charities, hillview.org and feedthechildren.org, are the big winners here.
