The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City officially kicks off the 2009 holiday season. For the first time in many years, the parade route has been changed so that spectators can get the best view of the 83rd Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Instead of the traditional route down Broadway, the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will head through Times Square along Seventh Avenue. The parade can be viewed from anywhere along the route but the coveted spot is Central Park West between 61st & 72nd Streets.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade starts at 9am on November 26. The new parade route at 77th Street & Central Park West, travels south to 59th Street before it turns onto Seventh Avenue.
From there, the Parade marches through Times Square to 42nd Street, where it travels over to Sixth Avenue to end at Macy’s Herald Square at 34th Street and Seventh Avenue.
In 1924, the inaugural parade (originally known as the Macy's Christmas Parade) was staged by the Macy's. Employees and professional entertainers marched from 145th Street in Harlem to Macy's flagship store on 34th Street dressed in vibrant costumes. There were floats, professional bands and live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo.
The modern day Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is not as simplistic as it was back in 1924, but it's still full of the tradition and entertainment it has brought to New York City since 1924.
