After months of hype, the highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 went on sale on Tuesday, November 10. The controversial video game surpassed sales records with a record $550 million worldwide in its first five days on sale.
That number will undoubtedly get much higher now that the holiday season is upon us. Consumers will be seeking out the Black Friday ads for deals on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for those who have it on their wish list. Many retailers, such as Target, are featuring this top seller in video game bundles in their Black Friday ads.
The sales records for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 surpassesthe previous record of just over $500 million set by "Grand Theft Auto IV" last year.
It hauled in $310 million in North America and the United Kingdom alone during the first 24 hours, making it the biggest-selling launch in the history of entertainment.
Activision added that more than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing the game on Microsoft's Xbox Live service during its first day of availability.
There is plenty of controversy amidst the rave reviews of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, the levels of violence in the video game are so controversial that there some are calling for restrictions on the brutual war game. However, controversy often means bigger sales and for Call of Duty, that has proven to be true.
"In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon," said Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick.
With sales records broken in just five days, there is no doubt that it will be difficult to beat the record breaking numbers that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have by the end of the holiday season.
