Susan Boyle is a Scottish singer who came to international public attention in April 2009, when she appeared as a contestant on Britain's Got Talent. Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage.
Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle — from the show, various interviews, and her 1999 rendition of "Cry Me a River" — had been watched over 100 million times, an online record.
Susan Boyle suffered minor brain damage at birth, lived alone with her cat, had no job and was admitted to a clinic for exhaustion after losing out to a dance troupe in the final round of the show only strengthened her appeal to the public. The support for her music has been staggering.
Steve Barnett, chairman of Columbia Records, said: "One of the things that is so unique about Susan Boyle is her ability to touch people around the world. We’re excited that I Dreamed a Dream holds the new record for global pre-orders and that Amazon’s customers have supported her album in this way.”
The album is the largest ever global CD pre-order on online retailer Amazon.com, with sales reportedly in excess of 100,000, and is the bookmakers' favorites to top the British chart over the lucrative Christmas period.
Susan Boyle's record breaking album will include covers of "Wild Horses" and "You'll See" as well as "I Dreamed a Dream", "Memory" and "Cry Me a River".
