Call of Duty Video Game Series Tops $3 Billion in Sales

The recently released in the Call of Duty video game series, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," has had record-breaking results. Overall, the "Call of Duty" series has sold more than 55 million units since its launch in 2003, according to manufacturer Activision Blizzard Inc.

The latest release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is destined to be the biggest seller of this Holiday season. The pricey video game, around $60, is available on the Xbox 360, PS3, and for PCs.

However, there is plenty of controversy amidst the rave reviews of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, the levels of violence in the video game are so controversial that there some are calling for restrictions on the brutual war game.

After months of hype, the highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 went on sale on Tuesday, November 10. The controversial video game surpassed sales records with a record $550 million worldwide in its first five days on sale.

"If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history," Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said in a company release.

That sales figures will undoubtedly get much higher now that the holiday season is upon us. Consumers will be seeking out the Black Friday ads for deals on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for those who have it on their wish list. Many retailers, such as Target, are featuring this top seller in video game bundles in their Black Friday ads.

Controversial or not, the Call of Duty video game series is bringing in some serious cash for Activision. It's not for the faint of heart of anti-gun activists, but the sales records show that this series of video games does not sit latent on the shelves.
