Top Gifts Not to Buy This Holiday Season Includes Fruitcake

The intentions are all good but some holiday gifts scream "waste of money." However thoughtful you think your gift is, it's often better to give a hand made card that a gift that will likely end up in a basement or just might be offensive to the recipient. Money is tight this year for many and a simple, "Happy Holidays" might fare better than these top Christmas gift money-wasters.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what gifts might not make a person's favorite gift list. Here are a few gift ideas to keep away from:

Useless gadgets: These are often found near cash registers piled high (because most people do not buy them) and aren't expensive. However, they are a waste of money if no one uses them. Avoid "cute" gifts like golf-ball-finder glasses, battery-powered potato peelers, the Ronco Pocket Fisherman.

Desk Items: Bart Simpson paperweights, "Gone fishin'" plaques, desktop golf sets, "I Hate My Job" mugs.

A Bit Too Personal: Lingerie, nose-hair trimmers, weight-loss books, deodorant gift packs

Thoughtless: Cookies for the diabetic, Wine for a non-drinker or a box of chocolates for someone who is trying hard to lose weight.

Tacky: Holiday clothing, including sweatshirts with a light-up Santa, Chia Pets, and anything from the "As Seen on TV" site, including the Snuggie. If someone actually wants a Snuggie, let them order that privately.

Fruitcakes: Yes, this is a classic holiday gift and no one really knows why. It's possible that someone actually likes this, but a fruit basket might be a better idea.

Holiday shopping is underway, with shoppers lurking around for the Cyber Monday deals and hoping to find that perfect gift for someone. Often the gift of time and help is better than stressing out over a gift that might just be a big waste of hard earned cash.
