Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis Firing Still Unconfirmed

Following Notre Dame's 45-38 loss to Stanford Saturday night, Coach Charlie Weis is under just a bit of pressure. The rumors of his impending firing are starting to spread around on the Internet, but nothing is confirmed yet. According to an ABC sidelines reporter Coach Weis has been asked to clean out his office. If that doesn't smell of an impending firing, nothing does.

Notre Dame's Charlie Weis hasn't been in the good graces of fans and alumni for quite some time. Weis was named Notre Dame's 28th head football coach on December 12, 2004. Since taking the Irish to BCS Bowls in each of his first two seasons in South Bend, Notre Dame is 16-21, the school's worst three-year run since 1961.

In a report issued by ABC sideline reporter Lisa Salters after Saturday's game, Notre Dame president Father John I. Jenkins apparently asked Coach Weis to clean up his office immediately.

“While Weis had originally planned a recruiting trip of the West Coast for this week, we have decided it is prudent that he return with the team and pack his boxes ... We are reorganizing the athletic department, and feel it would be best if we move the football coach's office from its current location by the stadium to coach Weis's family home in Trenton, N.J.”

In addition to the ABC report, Notre Dame has asked Coach Weis to refrain from appearing before the media, attending team practices, and using stationary that refers to him as the Notre Dame football coach.

With Weis coaching career with Notre Dame in limbo many await the decision on whether he will remain at Notre Dame or not. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he would make a decision this week about whether Weis, who has six years left on his contract, will remain Notre Dame's coach.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Weis is telling people that he has been contacted by multiple NFL teams, presumably to serve in the position of offensive coordinator. From 1997 to 2004, Charlie Weis was an NFL offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, and later for the New England Patriots.

If Charlie Weis is indeed fired from Notre Dame, he will likely be heading back to the NFL, where many believe he belongs. Speculation is that he would be most likely to end up with the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs or back with the New England Patriots.

An announcement is likely to come this week from Notre Dame regarding the fate of the Fighting Irish's coach, Charlie Weis.
