Singer Annie Lennox is continuing to heighten awareness and raise money to fight HIV in South Africa. Lennox is just one of many who will share in the efforts to bring more attention to the stigma of those who have aids AIDS. World AIDS Day is December 1, 2009 and Lennox plans to auction off some very special gifts in return for much needed help to continue her AIDS awareness program, SING, in South Africa.
Annie Lennox, 54, is a British musician and recording artist. She began her recording career as a member of the British pop band The Tourists, and subsequently formed the synth pop duo Eurythmics with former bandmate David A. Stewart. Lennox has been named "The Greatest White Soul Singer Alive" by VH1 and one of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine.
The day prior to World AIDS day, Annie Lennox will be one of a number of high-profile speakers at a briefing on the subject of HIV stigma at the Houses of Parliament on November 30. The following day, Annie Lennox will celebrate the SING Campaign’s second anniversary on December 1 by auctioning five very special prizes on eBay.
One of these is the chance to receive a phonecall from Annie Lennox, who will chat and then perform a song to you, live, down the phone. The event will be filmed, put on DVD, signed and sent to the winner. Other prizes include handwritten lyrics, autographed SING merchandise and a signed lithograph of Annie.
The money raised from the SING auction will help prevent the spread of HIV in South Africa, where 1,000 people die from AIDS-related causes every day. Moreover, approximately a third of all pregnant women there carry the virus, and without intervention, a third of their children will be born with HIV. Unless they get diagnosed and treated, half of all children with HIV die before their first birthday.
Since 2007, SING has raised over $2 million, and helped over 100,000 people affected by HIV in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
